Prevention Of Airbag Theft

When the Disklok was originally designed over 20 years ago, its main purpose was to prevent Thieves from stealing your car. For all intents and purposes it has been extremely successful in doing so, as it is still the no.1 steering wheel lock in the UK. Of course the Disklok gives no protection to the outside of the wheel, so anything left on show or on in the dashboard is still privy to thieves. However it will also protect you from another increasing phenomenon in recent years – Airbag Theft.

But why would someone want to steal your Airbag?

It is a good question, and one you may not have asked yourself before. Worryingly, there seems to be an ever increasing black market for Airbags, and if you have had to purchase one yourself recently, you will know they aren’t cheap. Replacement airbags will now cost between £400-1000 depending on the make of your car.

Another problem is you may not know that it has been stolen until the worst possible time – when you crash. Thieves are skilled enough to steal it without any marks being left on the steering wheel, and if your car has been left open then there is no way you may know it has been stolen . This article in the Manchester Evening News highlights the growing problem, and also suggest that it only takes between 6-8 minutes for a skilled thief to take your airbag.

Airbag Theft is now becoming recognised as organised crime, with police targeting specific rings who then sell onto used car dealerships and garages to fit the stolen airbags. Now you have another reason to use the Disklok, to prevent your airbag being stolen!
